Potters, as ceramists are most often known, are influenced by where they have traveled, lived and with whom they have studied. The work they create in porcelain, stoneware and earthenware vary from decorative vessels to functional tableware. Some forms are wheel-thrown, other shapes require the skill of hand building, and many are a combination of both. High-fire glazes, the ancient art of raku, and pit firings are some of the firing methods utilized. Potters may enhance their work with intricate basketweave carvings, block print designs, and burnished patterns.
